Usually, new laptop battery comes in a discharged condition and it must be charged before use (refer to your computer manual for charging instructions). Upon initial use (or after a prolonged storage period) the laptop battery may require two to three charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum capacity.

Hit the battery, and other acts will also accelerate depletion of battery. So, pay attention to your battery as much as possible.
If you don't use you laptop battery for 1 month or longer, you can remove the battery from your notebook, remember charge leave your battery power about 40%, stored in a shade, cool, dry place away from heat and metal objects and direct sunlight, but not in the refrigerator. It may therefore be necessary to recharge the battery after a storage period.
